Spiros Vougias
Mr. Spiros Vougias has been the Deputy Minister of Citizen Protection since October 7, 2009.
He was born in Thessaloniki in 1952 and attended the 2nd and 5th High Schools of Thessaloniki. He studied in the Department of Surveyor Engineering at the Polytechnic School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. During the same period, he was a player of the basketball team of Thessaloniki YMCA in the first division championship.
He completed his postgraduate studies (Master’s Degree) at the Imperial College of London and assumed a Phd in the Department of Surveyor Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
He is a Professor of Transportation Engineering at the Department of Civil Engineering. He has taught as a visiting professor at the Imperial College, Berkeley University in the U.S. and the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris.
He was an active member of the student movement during the Athens Polytechnic protest in 1973. He was later actively involved in the Association of Transportation Engineers, the Technical Chamber and Local Government.
He served as a Municipal Councilor of the Municipality of Thessaloniki (1994-2006) and a Mayor candidate at the 1998 and 2002 elections.
He was elected as a PASOK MP at the 2000 general election. He has also served as a Deputy Minister of Transportation and Communications, and the spokesperson of PASOK.
He is married and a father of 2 children.
