The Minister of Public Order Mr. George Voulgarakis made the statement that follows, on the occasion of today being the day that the Member of Parliament Mr. P. Bakoyannis was assassinated 16 years ago:
“The day of today marks the completion of 16 years that have gone by since the Member of Parliament Mr. Bakoyannis was assassinated in a cowardly way by the terrorist organization `17th of November` .
By assassinating P. Bakoyannis the terrorists were trying to give a direct and violent blow to our parliamentary system, while also trying to put an end to the victim`s dream for consensus, cooperation and national conciliation to make this country can go forward; nevertheless, they did not succeed.
Terrorism is a crime against Democracy, while still remaining a crime against the life and the dignity of a human person. Terrorism is no ideology nor does it constitute any form of political action. It is an enduring crime and that is why we need to cherish in an enduring and powerful way the memory of its victims. A constant and efficient arm in the fight against terrorism is for us to be always alert in favor of democracy.
Aiming at honoring the great political heritage of P. Bakoyannis, we would like to name the central meeting and ceremonies room of the Ministry of Public Order after P. Bakoyannis. The new name “Pavlos Bakoyannis Meeting and Ceremonies` Room” is the least we can do as a token to honor his sacrifice.
This ceremony shall take place on October 20th, 2005, the celebration day of the Hellenic Police Force”.
